Light Active Magnesium Oxide for Rubber & SMC | Buyer Guide

Light active Magnesium oxide - often called active magnesia - is a specialty grade of MgO defined by two things: low bulk density ("light") and high reactivity ("active"). Those two properties make it an indispensable auxiliary agent in rubber compounding and in SMC/BMC unsaturated polyester molding compounds, where it quietly controls vulcanization chemistry and viscosity maturation curves. If you buy MgO for either application, the specification that matters most is activity value - and how consistently your supplier hits it.

What "Light Active" Actually Means

Light magnesium oxide is produced by controlled calcination of magnesium carbonate or hydroxide at relatively low temperatures. The result is a fine powder with:

·         Low bulk density (typically well under 0.5 g/cm3) - hence "light"

·         High specific surface area and a reactive, defective crystal lattice

·         High activity value, measured by iodine adsorption (mg I2/g)

The higher the calcination temperature, the more the lattice sinters and the lower the activity. Active magnesia is therefore a product of precise, controllable thermal processing - which is why lot-to-lot consistency separates serious producers from commodity suppliers.

Understanding Activity Value (Iodine Adsorption)

Activity value is determined by measuring how much iodine a given mass of MgO adsorbs, reported in mg I2/g. It correlates with:

·         Surface area and particle fineness

·         Speed of reaction with acids and carboxyl groups

·         Dissolution and hydration behavior in water-based systems

For rubber and SMC work, buyers typically agree a target activity band (grade-specific) rather than a single number. A band is the right way to specify: an activity far below spec slows reactions, while an activity far above spec can cause scorch in rubber or uncontrolled thickening in SMC.

Role 1: Magnesium Oxide in Rubber Compounding

In rubber technology, active MgO plays several simultaneous roles:

·         Acid acceptor. In halogenated elastomers such as polychloroprene (CR), CSM and XNBR, MgO neutralizes the hydrogen chloride and acid by-products released during vulcanization and service, protecting the compound and the equipment.

·         Vulcanizing agent and curing modifier. In CR compounds, MgO is part of the classic cure system, giving scorch safety during processing and a controlled, state-of-cure finish.

·         Heat-aging improver. By binding acidic species, MgO markedly improves heat aging and flex-fatigue retention in demanding articles like belts, hoses and mounts.

·         Process stabilizer. In peroxide and sulfur systems, small MgO additions stabilize viscosity and reduce bin-scorch risk.

Typical addition levels depend on the polymer and article, but active magnesia is dosed in phr (parts per hundred rubber) quantities - and because it reacts, its activity value directly translates into how much you actually need.

Role 2: MgO as the SMC Thickening Agent

In Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) and Bulk Molding Compound (BMC), the unsaturated polyester resin carries carboxylic acid end groups. MgO reacts with these groups and crosslinks the resin molecules into a lightly networked gel, raising viscosity from pourable to molding-ready - the "maturation" step.

The activity value is the throttle on this reaction:

·         Too low: slow, incomplete maturation; paste never reaches molding viscosity.

·         Too high: viscosity runs away before the paste has been mixed, wetted and impregnated.

·         Just right, batch after batch: a predictable maturation curve your production planners can trust.

This is precisely why SMC producers audit their MgO supplier's consistency data as carefully as the spec sheet itself.

Storage and Handling: Activity Is Perishable

2. Store cool and dry, off the floor, away from water sources.

3. Apply first-in-first-out discipline; do not stockpile beyond practical consumption.

4. Prefer suppliers using moisture-barrier packaging with liner bags for export shipments.

FAQ

What activity value do rubber-grade and SMC-grade MgO have?

It is grade-specific and normally specified as a guaranteed band. Rubber acid-acceptor grades and SMC thickener grades sit in different activity ranges - tell your supplier the application and they will match the grade, ideally with a trial batch.

Can I use one MgO grade for both rubber and SMC?

Sometimes, but not ideally. Rubber compounding prioritizes acid-accepting behavior and heat-aging performance; SMC prioritizes a precise, repeatable maturation curve. Dedicated grades avoid compromise.

Why did my SMC paste thicken faster than usual with a new MgO lot?

Almost always an activity-value excursion above the agreed band. Ask the supplier for the batch COA and compare iodine adsorption against the previous lot.

How should active magnesium oxide be stored?

Sealed, dry and cool, with FIFO turnover. Air exposure carbonates the surface and permanently reduces activity.
