Inside the heating element, behind the plastic shell

Look inside the tubular heating element of a water heater or an oven and you will find magnesium oxide. It is the standard electrical-insulation filler — it insulates the resistance wire from the metal sheath while carrying heat outward, which is a combination very few materials can deliver.

01Electrical-grade MgO for heating elements

A sheathed heating element is built by filling the tube with MgO powder around a coiled resistance wire, then swaging the tube down to compact the powder. The MgO has to do two contradictory jobs at once: block current and conduct heat. That places specific demands on the powder:

  • High purity and low conductivity — alkali and conductive impurities cause leakage current and early failure.

  • Controlled flow and fill density — the powder must fill the tube uniformly on an automated line and compact to a consistent density.

  • Moisture control — MgO picks up water, which collapses insulation resistance; grades are dried, and often surface-treated, to stay stable before and during filling.

  • Thermal stability — no breakdown or volume change across repeated heat cycles.

02Where you find it

Storage water heaters, electric ovens and hobs, kettles, coffee machines, irons, dishwashers and washing machines — essentially every appliance with a sheathed heating element uses MgO as the insulating fill.

The same material, in coarser refractory form, is used in cartridge heaters and industrial heating elements, where a modified MgO with higher temperature capability is specified.

03Flame retardancy for housings and internal parts

Outside the heating element, Mg(OH)2 carries the fire performance: halogen-free flame retardancy for PP and ABS housings, internal structural parts and wiring, helping appliances meet glow-wire and UL 94 requirements without halogenated additives — important both for export compliance and for the air quality inside a home.

04Recommended grades

GradeTypical specificationWhere it fits
MgO-ElectricMgO ≥ 96%, low alkali content, dried, controlled flowabilityInsulation filling for heating elements (domestic appliances)
MgO-HTMgO ≥ 97%, high-temperature modified, low moisture uptakeHigh-temperature heating tubes, industrial heating elements
MH-ApplianceMg(OH)₂ ≥ 96%, D50 2–4 μm, surface-treatedHalogen-free flame retardancy for appliance housings and internal parts

Electrical-grade MgO is specification-driven. Send us your filling process, target insulation resistance and sheath temperature, and we will match the grade and packing moisture level.
